The Base Phase

The first stage of our training program is base phase.

We’ll start by establishing an aerobic and endurance base to build our training program around. Developing this aerobic and endurance phase takes some time. Endurance is a cyclist ability to ride for long periods of time and to recover faster. The reason we ride easy in the base mile phase is to allow the body to recover and be able to ride day after day, this way we can have weeks with lots of time on the saddle.

In order to do a good base, you’ll need commitment. One drawback of riding easy is that if you don’t do it enough no gain will be made and loss of overall fitness will occur. So you need to stay committed in order to improve. Also we need a way to gauge our efforts and keep the ride consistent. Two of the best ways to do this is by having a heart rate monitor or a power meter. One or two of these measurements can be used as a way to achieve a control ride.

In our base group rides, we’ll have riders of various fitness levels and what it is easy for some it maybe not for others. This is when we need to ride with our heart rate monitors between 70% to 80% of Max heart rate. This way every rider stays within his or her fitness level and rides at an endurance pace. Remember this is not about how fast can you go or if you can stay with the front group, but about how long can you ride today, tomorrow, the next day and so on.
